Stories

R&D went to Yellowstone National Park in 2012 to investigate the water at Octopus Springs (the research paper can be found on the publications page). After seeing a picture of the canyons in the corridor of our accommodations, that looked like they had a lot of potential, we asked around town. We discovered that it was well-known site, owned by Native Americans, and that if you wanted to take pictures, you had to hire a special tour guide. We traveled to Arizona to locate these Canyons. Inside the canyons, it was cool despite the desert heat outside. David switched between three different camera bodies matched with different lenses because he couldn't take a picture in time if he had to keep changing the lenses on one body. This meant that we had to carry a lot of bulky tripods and cameras with us into the canyon. Time was of the essence; we observed that the geospheric effects varied with the time of day. Different and distinct effects are produced inside the canyons by the different alignment of angles from which sunlight strikes particular areas of the canyons and/or its reflection. To capture as many of these field effects, we visited the canyons at least five times over the course of one week. Normally tourists only visit once, so our eager persistence in repeatedly visiting the canyons perplexed our tour guide. While capturing the geospheric effects, we also had to help with traffic control because, despite the pictures' peaceful appearance, Antelope Canyon was overrun with people. We assisted David in holding the tripod in place for a longer exposure time because some areas were extremely dark and narrow and required him to stay very still for a longer exposure time, using extreme muscle strength to maintain balance. We had to squeeze through narrow passageways and climb some steep ladders with photography gear over our shoulders, to reach some higher and tighter spaces. The guide, who eventually became a close friend, gave us an introduction to Rattlesnake Canyon, saying that it is a hidden gem that not many people visit. The canyon was a considerable distance away from the large crowd. From where the car had stopped, it initially appeared to be just another mountain bypass, but we would soon learn why it was a lesser-known canyon: it was noticeably narrower and less suitable to hold large groups of people. As we meandered through the tight passageways, we were struck in awe by its understated beauty - its perfect curves, unique ambience where the formation of the rock walls was a perfect harmony of power, tranquility and elegance, found at every twist and turn within the canyon. It was one of the most gorgeous sights that one could never grow tired of seeing, a sight towards which one would want to express a humble and infinite appreciation.
